Bumthang Cultural Trek

This three days trek provides the most spectacular opportunity for experiencing the rural way of life in Bhutan. This is a three-day trek starting from the splendid Bumthang valley. The trek passes through several villages on its meandering route. After the trek you will get an opportunity to visit various Monasteries and historical places in various districts of Bhutan.

Day 01: Arrival at Paro
The flight into Paro by Druk Air – Bhutan’s National Airline, is a befitting introduction to the stunning beauty of our country. On a clear day, one can have brilliant views of the world’s highest peaks. The Paro International Airport (where you will lend) lies in the lush green valley of Paro. Your local escort from Bhutan Travel Connection will receive you on arrival, and then drive you to your Hotel.

Day 02: Paro
Morning – Drive to the ruins of the Drukgyal Dzong 15 km up the valley. Built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, unifier of medieval Bhutan. The dzong was destroyed accidentally by fire and was left in ruins since then. However it serves as a reminiscent of the great victories it was built to commemorate. On a clear day, you can have spectacular view of Mt. Jhomolhari (7,314 m).

Our next visit is Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rimpung Dzong, the centre of civil and religious authority in this district. A short walk will take you to the base of the dzong and across a traditional wooden cantilevered bridge. The evening ends with a free time to stroll through Paro’s main shopping area.

Day 03: Paro – Thimphu
Drive to Thimphu will take approximately 2 hours. Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan. Visit Memorial Chorten (Stupa). This stupa was built in the memory of 3rd King of Bhutan. We will also be visiting the Painting School where young bhutanse learn the thirteen classical arts of Bhutan. Indegenous Hospital, where traditional medicines is still practised, Tashichho dzong and Motithang zoo – to see the national animal.

Day 04: Thimphu – Trongsa
The drive to Trongsa will be long but enchating one. It will takes about seven hours across the Dochula Pass (3050m) and Pelela Pass. On a clear day one can get a good view of the Himalayan ranges from Dochula Pass. Drive through Wangdue town. Picnic lunch at Chendebji Chorten. Overnight in Trongsa.

Day 05: Trongsa – Bumthang
In the morning, visit the Trongsa Dzong and see also the Ta Dzong (Watch Tower). Drive through Trongsa town to the broad & beautiful valley of Bumthang. Stop over at Chume Valley, where local women weave the famous “Bumthang Yathra”, pure woolen textile. It is woven in the traditional technique with beautiful colored motifs & patterns. Overnight in Bumthang.

Day 06: Jakar – Nagang Lhakhang
The Bumthang Cultural trek begins and the first day will be a easy and rlaxing one. This 5 to 6 hour trek along the Chamkhar river brings us through many villages and settlements and also some temples. At the end of the day, camp at a village which is at an altitude of about 2900m.

Day 07: Nagang Lhakhang – Ugyen Choling
The second day of our trek leads us to the Phephela pass (3340m). Then descend to Tang valley, finally arriving at Ugyen choling village, our camp site. Altitude : 2850m, walking time 7-8 hours.

Day 08: Ugyen Choling – Bumthang
Take a refreshing morning walk up to the Ugyen Choling Dzong. After visiting the dzong and the surrounding village, drive back towards Jakar. En-route visit the legendary “burning lake” (Mebartsho), which is generally regarded a very holy and sacred place for the Bhutanese. Trek ends here. Drive to Bumthang. Overenight in Bumthang.

Day 09: Bumthang
Sightseeing in Bumthang valley will include visit to the Kurje Lhakhang ( monstrey), Jampa Lhakhang, Wangdichholing Palace, Jakar Dzong, Tamshing Monastry, Konchhosum Lhakhang, Swiss Farm House. Evening – free time. Overnight in Bumthang.

Day 10: Bumthang – Punakha
The drive from Bumthang to Punakha will take approximately 8 hours.

Ovenight at Hotel in Punakha/Wangdi.

Day 11: Punakha – Paro
Morning visit the Punakha Dzong and Chhimi Lhakhang (a temple dedicated to barren women). Then drive to Paro. The drive will take approximately 4 and 1/2 hours. Overnight in Paro.

Day 12: Departure
Bhutan Travel Connection representative will see you off at the airport.

Payment Procedures:
Tour payment must be sent four weeks prior to date of arrival in Bhutan. The visa is issued by the Government of Bhutan subject to advance payment only.

Once the trip is confirmed we will send you the instructions for making payment.

Accommodation will be in tourist hotels on a full board basis throughout the tour.( with exception of the drinks) entrée fees, airport and tour transportation will be included as well as a qualified English speaking guide accompanying you during the whole duration of the tour. In case another speaking guide will be needed a surcharge will be applicable.
